Each country has its own unique drinking tradition

Scandinavians drink mainly lightly-roasted washed arabica coffees; Southern Europeans prefer a stronger tasting, darker roasted blend, whilst developing markets, such as China and Russia, and those with a strong tea-drinking tradition, such as Japan and UK, tend to drink more instant coffee.

The last decade has witnessed the revival of the coffee shop worldwide. Large chains as well as small coffee shops have populated the streets of many cities, both in the developed world as well as in the developing. The coffee shop and the appearance of different capsule systems are both increasing the popularity of Italian style coffee: the espresso.

There is also an increasing interest all around the world in differentiated coffee, from gourmet coffee of higher grades and special regions to certified coffees meant to reassure either economic, social or environmental standards.
